Shri Guru Granth Sahib, the only scripture in the world to
have honour of being ‘The Guru Of Sikhs’, the most dynamic community of the
world has another remarkable feature. Each and every word contained herein
comes straight from the souls who lived in unison with the Eternal.
Prefect Guru as Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is, the Gurbani here, guides the whole
humanity, not only in spiritual matters but also in its daily social
intercourse, while dealing with economic, political and religious affairs.
Thus, it is in the fitness of the things that we dive deep
into this ocean of virtues, this treasure house of the most valuable gems of
thought and feeling, and try to follow the teachings contained therein, so that
the way of life taught here becomes the anchor of our lives.
The holy Guru Granth Sahib contains the spiritual compositions
of not only the Sikh Gurus but also of holy men hailing from different regions
of Indian subcontinent, belonging to different faiths and speaking different
languages. There is no discrimination, whatsoever, on the basis of caste, creed
or colour. The only criteria being an intense longing for the Lord and a pious
life. It contains the ‘Bani’ of six Sikh Gurus, 15 Bhagats from different
regions and castes, 11 Bhats and 3 Gursikhs. Here are the details of
contribution made by each one of them:

The Gurus shattered the age old prejudice against music which
till date was considered fit to be sung only by despicable people in the
company of dishonourable ones. Sikh Gurus elevated the status of music by
rendering all their songs of the spirit in 31 musical Ragas. Till today, the
sacred Bani is sung in prescribed musical Ragas. Thus music was made the food
for soul.
